Instructions for PC and Mac users on how to pass in a USB device such as a thumb/pen drive into a Citrix application

Detail:

If you need to connect a USB storage device such as a thumb drive or portable HDD into a Citrix application then follow these steps.

Note that a USB device passed into a Citrix application will disappear from use on your computer - it shows up for use in one place or the other - but not both at the same time. Make sure you have saved your document/content first on your computer onto the USB device, then connect it to Citrix using the instructions below

Instructions for PC

  1. Log on to Citrix and open your Citrix application as usual.
  2. Once your Citrix session is established and your application has opened, look for the "Citrix Receiver" or "Citrix Workspace" icon in your system tray - usually near your clock on your task bar.
The icon looks like this: (the colours can vary depending on the version you have installed)

  3. Right-click the icon and choose "Connection Center"
  4. On the right-hand side of the window that opens, click "Devices" and select your USB device. Note that additional devices can show up here that aren't your USB thumb drive so be careful what you choose. You'll see from the screenshot that there are a couple of other devices listed - these are usually audio/video/cameras etc. and can be internal to your computer (like a webcam on a laptop for example). Normally the name of the device in this list will mention the brand, and in most cases will mention "USB" and/or "Flash drive" - this is the device you want to select. If you have more than one USB device, each supported device will show in this list.
  5. Once you select your device, wait a few seconds and it will be connected to your Citrix application (and removed from view from your computer)

Note that once the device is connected to your Citrix session, it is shared amongst any open Citrix applications.  If you connect the device while you have Citrix MS Word open, if you switch to Citrix MS Excel you will see the same device. Citrix apps that are launched after the device is connected to the session will also see it and be able to open/save to it.

To remove the USB device again from Citrix, simply follow the same steps as above and select it again. The tick will be removed and the device will be passed back to your computer again.

Instructions for Mac

  1. Log on to Citrix and open your Citrix application as usual.
  2. Click the “Devices” menu, then “USB Devices”.  Note that additional devices can show up here that aren't your USB thumb drive so be careful what you choose. You'll see from the screenshot that there are a few other devices listed - these are usually audio/video/cameras etc. and can be internal to your computer (like a webcam on a laptop for example). Normally the name of the device in this list will mention the brand, for instance, “Imation Classic”. If you have more than one USB device, each supported device will show in this list.
